Hidalgo County New Mexico

Elias, husband of Ramona
1904 - 1986
He was born in Douglas on July 20,1904, the son of Tomas and Ysabel Gomez. Elias came with his parents to Rodeo in January of 1926. He worked for the highway department when they were paving the road to Douglas, then started working with Southern Pacific Railroad as a laborer.

He married Ramona Meneses on September 16, 1928 at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lordsburg and started a family. His work kept he and his family moving. They lived in Pratt, Animas, Playas, Hemanas and anywhere else on the southern line where he was needed. He and Ramona settled in Rodeo where they built their home. The whole family helped in making the adobes to build the house with. They raised eight children here, Irene, Connie, Lenore, Alice, Manuel Elias, Jr., Nettie, Elizabeth and Robert.

In 1961 and 1962 the railroad disbanded the line from El Paso to Tucson, everyone was sent to other areas. With all of the children but Robert and Elizabeth married, Elias and Ramona packed up Izzy (Elizabeth) and Robert moved to Fairbanks for three months and then on to Lordsburg where Elias retired in seven years on July 20, 1975 and the family moved back to Rodeo. Elias suffered a stroke in 1984 and then on May 29, 1986, he passed away.
