Hidalgo County New Mexico

Ira Bertram Richards
May 3, 1887 - October 28, 1955
Ira was born at Clifton, Bosque County, Texas to Hampton Evans Richards (1859-1918) and Emma Mildred Phillips (1867-1906). As a young man, Bert went to western Texas and homesteaded with his brother, Clarence and then returned to Bosque County.

On May 31, 1913, Bert and Hattie Elizabeth Richards were married and they became the parents of four children. They first engaged in farming near Moshiem, Texas, but Bert developed tuberculosis and was told to move to a drier climate to regain his health. His brother, Clarence, and uncle, Moore Phillips, had bought acreage near Rodeo, New Mexico, and encouraged Bert and Hattie to relocate in the same area. They arrived in November of 1918, bought the Pattison place and settled on the State Line, near Rodeo. Three additional children were born here.

They ranched, acquiring more tracts of land through the years. In the early 1950’s they sold part of the ranch to sons, Fin and Bill, and the home tract to the Merrill brothers who put in a farm. Hattie and Bert built a nice home in Rodeo where they lived out their lives.

Bert died in Odessa, Texas on October 28, 1955 after he retired from ranching. He was buried in the Rodeo Cemetery on October 31st.
